Wildlife Resource Inventory

Riverine Habitat System

The Riverine System includes all wetlands and deepwater habitats
contained within a channel except wetlands dominated by trees, shrubs,
persistent emergents, nonaquatic mosses or lichens. A channel is, "an
open conduit either naturally or artificially created which periodically
or continuously contains moving water, or which forms a connecting link
between two bodies of standing water" (Langbein and Iseri 1960:5)..

Species used in habitat evaluation procedures for the wildlife
resource inventory of the riverine habitat system are:

American coot Fu~ica americancm
Raccoon Pl'ocyon ~otOl'
Muskrat Ondatra aibethica
Killdeer Cha:r>ac1'ius vooife1'U8
Red-tailed hawk Buteo jamaicensis
Red-winged blackbird Age~ams phoenicens
Common gallinule Ga~~inuZa ch~oropsus

Palustrine Habitat System

The Palustrine System includes all wetlands dominated by trees,
shrubs, persistent emergents, nonaquatic mosses or lichens. It also
includes wetlands lacking such vegetation, but with all the following
characteristics: 1) size less than 8 hectares; 2) absence of an active-
wave-formed or bedrock shoreline feature; and 3) water depth in the
deepest part of basin less than 2 meters at low water.

Species used in habitat evaluation procedures for the palustrine
habitat system are:

Red-tailed hawk Buteo jamaicensis
Golden eagle AquiZa chrysaetos
Mourning dove Zenaidum macroura
Black-tailed jackrabbit Lepus ca~ifo1'nicus
Nuttall cottontail Sy~vi~agus nutta~~ii
Common raven C01'TJUS COl'ClZ
Gambells quail Lophorty~ gambe~ii
Roadrunner Geococcy~ ca~ifo1'nianus

Lacustrine Habitat System

The Lacustrine System includes wetlands and deep-water habitats with
all of the following characteristics: 1) situated in a topographic
depression or a dammed river channel; 2) lacking trees, shrubs, persist-
ent emergents, nonaquatic mosses or: lichens with greater than 30 percent
areal coverage; and 3) greater than 8 hectares (20 acres in size).
Similar wetlands and deep-water habitats smaller than 8 hectares are
also included in the Lacustrine System if an active wave-formed or

c-s

00(361
