Paradox Valley Salinity Control Unit

The Dolores River picks up an estimated 205,000 tons of salt annually

as it crosses the Paradox Valley. Approximately 97 percent of this salt

enters the river through brine inflow from seeps and springs located in

tile bottom of the river channel. The Paradox Valley Salinity Control Unit

was authorized for construction to control this salt pick-up by the

Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Act of 1974 (Public Law 93-320).

THis unit has the potential of controlling 90 percent of the brine inflow

to the Dolores River in Paradox Valley, thus reducing the salinity

concentration of the Colorado River at Imperial Dam by 18,2 mg/L of total

dissolved solids.

fj~C':>62
,-
