CHAPTER IV

ALTERNATiVES

.

The Glen....ood Springs collect ion system ....ould be connected to the
conveyance pipeline through a header pipe and pump system. The header
pipe would be similar to the pipe used near Dotsero.

W
<:,il
o
~~

Pump stations ....ould pump spring flows in lo....-lying areas to the
conveyance pipeline. The pump stations would utilize the available
pressure in the pipeline to run the plIl\pS ....hich would be equipped with
one alternative self-priming vertical turbine pump and ....ith emergency
overflow structures.

A river crossing would be required to connect Glen la, 20, and 30-40
to the conveyance pipeline. This crossing would consi9l of a 14-inch
fiberglass pipe enclosed in a larger pipe and buried under the river.

The flow collected from Glen la, 20, and 30-40 ....ould be piped to the
north side of the river ....here it would be joined by the flo.... from Glen 12
and lifted to the conveyance pipeline by a plJtlp station. A second p1.Dllp
station would lift the flow8 from Glen 50, 60, and 70 into the pipeline,
while a third station located near Glen 100 would lift the flows from
Glen 90 and 100 and the alluvial ....ell field into the pipeline.

Areas impacted by construction of the
revegetated. The collect ion system ....ould
about 10 years.

collection system
have an est imated

would
1 ife

be
of

.

Conveyance system.--The conveyance system from Dotsero and Glenwood
Springs to the evaporation pond site near Mack would consist of 131 miles
of concrete pressure pipeline. For 15 mile~ from Dotsero to Glenwood
Springs, the pipe ....ould have a diameter of 27 inches and a capacity of
14.2 cfs. From Glenwood Springs to the pond site, a distance of 116
miles, the pipeline would have a diameter of 36 inches and a capacity of
25.9 cfs. The pipeline was sized for 20 percent more than the average
flow to be collected to accommodate expected fluctuations. In Glenwood
Canyon, the pipeline ....ould follow the proposed alignment of 1-70. Where
the highway crossed the river. the pipeline would be suspended from the
highway structures. tn areas outside of Glenwood Canyon, the pipeline
would probably be buried under the highway right-of-way. The pipeline
would be buried with a minimum cover of 3 feet.

Cofferdams would be required for some construction activities In-
volving river crossings. These activities would be scheduled during the
late summer to avoid the high water and fish spawning periods. For other
construction activities, preferable construction periods would be July
through October for the pipeline and March through November for the col-
lection sites.

The pipeline would generally follow 1-70 and Highway 6 for 123 miles
from Dotsero to Mack, then proceed overland in 8 north....esterly direction
for approximately 8 miles to the evaporation pond site. Pipeline rights-
of-way would be revegetated.

.

The pipeline would include line isolation valves, blowoff valves,
pressure reduction stations, pressure relief valves, air/vacuum relief

23
