t.")
(.0
!>-
'.'::>
C-'
c:.

seasons. Present information suggests this to include any
area, close to the river and transportation, between Silt
and the city of Grand Junction. A prime determinant is soil
composition to provide for the required drainage while
reducing the cost of fill materials. The soils at the site
will be principally sands and silt, with minimal clay and
organics: this would be classified as marginal, undesirable
agricultural land.

The major deficiency found was that current literature does not
adequately define the functional capacity of selected emergent
halophyte species with respect to salinity. Upper limits of
salinity tolerance are unknown. These upper limits need to be
known in order to engineer and cost the STEP process facilities,
as well as to develop operational procedures and management
strategies appropriate for the plants and the process --- rates
of performance and product opportunities rely upon this
knowledge. !BR recommends that the funding necessary to develop
these data be provided.

The next report will focus upon agronomic and market questions,
provide a full listing of recommendations, and develop a plan
for their implementation. The industrialization of the STEP
process is IBR's business objective. IBR is in a position to
initiate activity on these recommendations immediately upon
receipt of funding approval.

-xxxxx-
