part through his efforts, he and curators of other principal collections on
campus have been meeting regularly with the CSU Provost to discuss
possibilities and pursue these goals, Darrel has spent much more time on this
effort than planned for FY 97, but as a result and as related in the following
paragraph, prospects for eventually securing pennanent status for the LFL
Collection within the university have improved considerably,

In fall 1996, the Provost of CSU arranged for an outside evaluation of the nature,
regional and national importance, curatorial status, and needs of natural history
research collections on campus, including the Larval Fish Laboratory Collection, The
purpose of the review was to document the value and potential of these collections
and secure the team's recommendations as to whether and how these collections
should be better supported and perhaps united as the foundation for a university
museum, The evaluation team, consisting ofa well know museum director (Dr.
James R. Estes, University of Nebraska at Lincoln) and two other collection experts
(Dr, Lynn S, Kimsey, University of California at Davis, and Dr, John G, Lundberg,
University of Arizona), concluded that development of a university-wide,
comprehensive, natural history museum is not feasible at this time, Rather, they
recommended that the collections be relocated to a single location on or very near to
campus with better physical and environmental facilities and sufficient space for
specimen-related research and collection expansion well into the future, In
association with this relocation, they further recommended that the collections be
designated as a research museum affiliated with a broader biodiversity program on
campus (specifically the Colorado Natural Heritage Program), Even prior to or
without relocation and unification, they emphasized the need for adequate university
support of the collections and collection personneL There is now a move through the
Provost's Office to bring the collections together under one appropriately remodeled
roof in a recently acquired building near campus (old Fort Collins High School) and
perhaps to eventually administer and support the collections as part of a newly
conceived "Institute of Biodiversity" which might serve as an umbrella for all natural
history research units and programs on campus,

The collections review team specifically recognized the Larval Fish Laboratory
Collection as one of the top two freshwater larval-fish collections in the nation,
despite it's current lack of status, support, and management as pennanent collection,
Credit for this recognition goes to largely to ongoing Recovery Program support for
the cataloging and curation ofUCRB collections, Without this support we might not
have been able to properly establish the LFL Collection catalog and policy regarding
collection management and procedures, much less properly catalog and curate nearly
half our holdings,

We expected to receive, install, and convert to a new, windows-based version of our
NSF-supported collection cataloging and management program (MUSE) in FY 97,
However, due to program instability, that expected upgrade (ZOE) has been scraped
and a new effort begun from scratch to accommodate all types of natural history

5
