COLORADO RIVER RECOVERY PROGRAM
FY 97 ANNUAL PROJECT REPORT

RECOVERY PROGRAM
PROJECT NUMBER: 22-A

I. Project Title: INTERAGENCY STANDARDIZED MONITORING PROGRAM

II. Principallnvestigator(s):

Frank K. Pfeifer, Project leader
Charles W. Project Summary:

The Interagency Standardized Monitoring Program (ISMP) was developed to monitor population
trends of Colorado squawfish and humpback chub in the Colorado River Basin. ISMP targets
YOY Colorado squawtish in the Green and Colorado rivers (sampling about 70% of the known
YOY squawfish distribution in the Green River and about 80% in the Colorado River), subadult
and adult Colorado squawfish in the Green, Colorado, White, and Yampa rivers (sampling
20-30% of occupied habitat within each of the four rivers), and adult humpback chub in Black
Rocks and Westwater Canyon on the Colorado River. ISMP began in 1986 and is scheduled to
continue as long as the Recovery Program is in place. A summary report describing the results
of the first seven years (1986-1992) of ISMP was produced and finalized by the Recovery
Program in 1994. The report made a number of recommendations for minor changes, most of
which were adopted by the Biology Committee. The most important change involves additional
sampling targeted at subadult-adult Colorado squawfish. Annual reports summarizing data
collected in 1993-1996 have also been completed.

IV. Study Schedule: 1986 to end of Recovery Program

V. Relationship to RIPRAP: General Recovery Program Support Action Plan, VA1. Conduct
Standardized Monitoring Program.

VI. Accomplishment of FY 97 Tasks and Deliverables, Discussion of Initial Findings and
Shortcomings:

Field sampling by CDOW and UDWR was completed as scheduled. Field assistance was
provided by Service personnel as requested.

An annual report summarizing the data collected in 1996 was completed and distributed (McAda
et al. 1997). Work on data collected during 1997 has begun. However, an annual report must
wait until data on preserved fish are received from the larval Fish laboratory.

1
