<br /> <br />()Or331 <br /> <br />Rocky Ford <br /> <br />Curriculum Vitae - Jim Valliant <br /> <br />Jim Valliant is Regional Extension Irrigation Specialist and Research Scientist for Colorado State <br />University serving the Arkansas River Basin and southeast Colorado. Jim was raised in the arid <br />west Texas town of Pecos and received his B.S. and M.S. in Agricultural Engineering from Texas <br />Tech University. He spent 16 years at the High Plains Research Foundation near Plainview, Texas <br />working on soil and water conservation, irrigation and artificial groundwater recharge. Jim served <br />as project farm manager for the Navajo Irrigation Project with 22,000 irrigated acres including <br />4,000 acres of alfalfa. He was farm manager for FoxIey Cattle Company in Crowley County, <br />Colorado managing 12,000 irrigated acres, 6,000 directly, growing alfalfa, corn, wheat, barley, <br />grasses and forage sorghum. Jim was with Anderson Seed of Lamar as Ag Division Manager <br />emphasizing alfalfa production. He joined Colorado State University in January of I 991 and <br />devotes a major portion of his time to water quality improvements through improved irrigation <br />technology using surge irrigation, trash screens, irrigation and nitrogen scheduling, <br />polyacrylamldes and water quality monitoring as part of the Patterson Hollow Water Quality <br />Project. The Patterson Hollow Project team has won the Colorado State University Extension <br />Team Award, the Western Region Extension Team Award and the Governor's Smart Growth <br />Award. Jim started the Arkansas River Basin Water Forum which is held annually to bring all <br />water users together to discuss problems and opportunities, just completing the 4th annual at La <br />Junta, Colorado in February of I 998, attended by over 130 persons. He also organized the <br />Arkansas River Technical Group in 1997 which meets quarterly to work on specific problems and <br />to update information on the work of the different attending organizations. In February of 1998, <br />Jim initiated a group to start a statewide Salinity Issues Team with the first meeting to be held <br />June 1998 to gather information on the salinity work the different local, state, federal and private <br />organizations are conducting. In 1998, he was part of an project to study the effect of high water <br />tables on soil and water salinity in Bent, Otero and Prowers counties. Mr. Valliant was also doing <br />studies with polyacrylamides to reduce seepage from dirt ditches and laterals. <br /> <br />May 1999 <br />
