<br /> <br />The availability of irrigation equipment and an adequate <br />source of water provides insurance against short-term <br />deficiencies in precipitation and permits supplemental <br />irrigation to obtain optimum yields from high value crops, <br /> <br />'. <br /> <br />Irrigation in Iowa has increased only slightly since <br />enactment of the Water Rights Law in 1957, Permits now in force <br />authorize irrigation of about 85,000 acres of the 25 million <br />cropped acres in the State, <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />c, Control of erosion and sedimentation <br /> <br />Iowa programs to control erosion and sedimentation are <br />administered by its Soil Conservation Districts and Subdistricts <br />thereof with technical assistance from the U, S, Soil Conser- <br />vation Service and financial assistance of the Agricultural <br />Conservation Program. State financial assistance and other <br />activities of the Districts are coordinated by the State Soil Con- <br />servation Committee, <br /> <br />The Soil Conservation Districts conduct a variety of <br />functions relating to soil and water conservation and the control <br />and prevention of erosion, flood water and sediment damages, <br />Under the Iowa enabling law, participation in the program is <br />"purely voluntary", <br /> <br />All farm land in the State is inclUded in soil conserva- <br />tion districts, about one-half of the farmers have signed <br />agreements to cooperate in the program, and conservation <br />practices have been installed on about one-third of the <br />agricultural land in the State, <br /> <br />d, Reservoir sites <br /> <br />(l)Reservation by advance acquisition <br /> <br />Iowa has no official policy or program for advance <br />acquisition of reservoir sites, Interests in lands necessary for <br />construction of a particular project are acquired as the project <br />is authorized and funded. <br /> <br />62 <br />
