The natural recharge of groundwater in the Hueco Bolson
deposits in the El Paso area is considerably less than the
discharge from wells. Presently, annual well yields is 10
cimes the estimated average annual recharge to the aquifer
and wacer levels are declining approximately LWO to three
feet per year.

As large quantities of fresh groundwater concinue to be
mined from Lhe Hueco Bolson, it is expected that there will be
problems with: (a) vertical leakage from the alluvium and
movemenc of other saline waLers from underlying and, adjacent
saline water bearing deposits; (b) declining well yields; and
(c) increasing pumping costs. The El Paso area's future is
impaired by both water quality and water supply problems.

003117

69
