samples were collected tor chemical anatysis.

In the type areas, existing wells were invento-
ried and historical ground-water data were compiled.
wells were installed where nceded 10 supplement the
existing wells. sediment-core samples were collected
from roreholes. geologic infoml:llion wa~ compiled,
:lnd a d:lta logger was installed in one well. In
addition to the t)'pe.arca investigations, wells were
inventoried and ground-water samples were collected
over a wide area to describe the areal distribution of
selenium and other trace constituents. Deep wells

(privately owned) were invenloried and sampled 10
describe the boundary conditions for possible trace-
constituenl migration into lhe study area from deep
aquifers. Where available, wells were invenloried and
sampled outside lhe irrigated areas 10 describe nalural
or nonirrigated condilions. Samples of Mancos Shale
bedrock were collected from cores archived althe
USGS Core Research Center in Den....er. Colo.
Historical ground-water data, aquifer-lest results.
and digital-map data were compiled by the BOR.
