Farmington and its
outlying area would receive 19,700 acre-feet each year from the
project The City of Aztec and its surrounding area would
receive up to 5,800 acre-feet each year and the City of
Bloomfield and its outlying area would receive up to 5,300
acre-feet each year. The Navajo Tribe is allocated 7,600
acre-feet for service in the Shiprock area.

Irrigable land in New Mexico along the La Plata River would
receive project water each year to guarantee a full crop yield.
The 8,180 acres of non-Indian irrigable land would receive 14,200
acre-feet of supplemental and full service water, and the Ute
Mountain Ute Indian Tribe would receive 900 acre-feet of water to
irrigate 380 acres of full service land on that portion of its
reservation in New Mexico. This supply represents a total of
53,500 acre-feet of water for municipal and industrial and
agricultural use for the benefit of the State of New Mexico.
Approximately 20,800 acre feet of water would annually return to
the Animas and La Plata River systems. The beneficial use of
project water and reservoir evaporation of 1,400 acre-feet would
deplete the Colorado River by 34,100 acre-feet, which, together
with other existing and planned development, completely uses all
of New Mexico's 11.25 percent allocation of water under the Upper
Colorado River Basin Compact.

The Economic Base

The project will affect the people and economy of La Plata
County, Colorado and San Juan County, New Mexico by having
beneficial influences on jobs, agriculture and recreation.
During the peak year of construction, 1993, the population influx
into the project area will total approximately 3,730 persons.
The jobs associated with construction will total approximately
1,150.

According to a Reclamation analysis done in 1979, on completion
of the project a total of about 180 jobs will be created in both
agriculture and related businesses, including almost 70 new
on-farm jobs in the two counties, with total wages estimated at
over $400,000 annually. The following table shows the estimated
increase in annual agricultural production resulting from the
project.

Crop Unit Colorado New Mexico Total
Hay Tons 106,000 16,000 122,000
Grain Bushels 322,000 266 000 588,000
Beef Pounds 9,686,000 692,000 10,378,000
Beans Hundredweight 168 000 0 168,000
Milk Gallons 2,065,000 389,000 2,454,000
