"tTn.._ 7& Cl

/,fh1l
'<-\:?

00
~
00

SAVERY-POT HOOK MITIGA TION

First alternative is the land owned and controlled by Alex Urie south

of Maybell. This consists o'f approximately 16,000 acres deeded, 2560 acres

of State School Land and 7680 acres of Bureau of Land Management Land.

Besides this he controls about 5040 acres of BLM in the vicinity of Juniper

Mountain that has been blocked to hunters for a number of years.

This land provides some of the best antelope and sage grouse habitat in

Moffat County. At one time, hunters took 600 animals per year from this

property. Antelope numbers have been reduced by the land owner as he is now

using the land to graze 'both cattle and sheep so obviously the antdope car rying

capacity has been reduced. There are also two major sage grouse strutting

grounds on the property and the eight miles along Deception Creek provide

excellent sage grouse brooding habitat.

The second alternative includes the lower Spicer property just below the

----
Powder Wash Road and the Snake River. This is a solid block of 7200 acres of

deeded land. .In addition, there are 3560 acres in scattered land tracts between

the Spicer land and the Wyoming State line and 5480 acres of school land within

two miles of the Snake River that should be obtained.

Some of the best sage grouse and antelope range in we5tern Moffat. County

is found in the Diamond Peak-Coal Springs Mountai n area near the Utah-Wyoming

border. The Buckley property consists of approximately 1700 acres deeded,

6-7000 acres of State School Land and approximately 60,000 acres of BLM lands.

A winter count last year showed 113 antelope wintering on the deeded ground

but the summer use is much greater.
