n~'!n'l
.) _ ._ '" OJ

In addition to the Beck plan, three conceptual water transfer plans were given

Cursory examination. These had been previously considered by the Nebraska
Water Resources Commission in the preparation of a state water plan in 1971.
The plans co~sisted of three relatively short routes shown within the State of
Nebraska as Route I on Figure.1. The general thrust here was to bring water
from the northern parts of the state to the south for more intensive agriculture.

The Omaha District was also responsible for this evaluation. It was quickly

determined that the plans involved intrastate water transfer only and thus

were the responsibility of the state and the Genf'ral Contractor to evaluate,

rather than the Corps. Other potential water transfer plans that have been

identified within the MRD area from previous studies include transfer of about

130,000 acre-feet per year of secondary treated wastewater from the 8maha area

to the upper Blue Ri ver Basin of Nebraska a~d west slope diversion to the

front range in Colorado. These concepts are not shown on Fi gure 4 and no

study funds were allocated for their review.

Arkansas-White-Red River Basins. The Bureau of Reclamation and Corps of Engi-
neers cooperated in studies to deliver lower Mississippi River water to the
west Texas and eastern New Mexico regions and published their reports in June
and October 1973, respectively.V Y. Several routes for this water transfer
plan were considered. The route selected (shown by dashed arrows on Figure i)
would divert water from the Mississippi River near the Old River control

2f United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation, "West
Texas and Eastern New Mexi co Import Project," June 1973.

!if Mississippi River Commission, "West Texas and Eastern New Mexico Water
Import Study," Summary Report, October, 1973, Vicksburg, MS.

15
