PROJECT _ CONTEST
We've C()vered quite a lot of gro,und
in the past four months. Probably
things are getting a little dull on the
home front so we will take time this
month to _star,t a pr\lject.
F6t ,a, S,lmpJe starter we w;U experi-
ment 'with . a ,doorbelL' sYstem. It
sholj.ldl)~Lcost too much .to: purchaSe'
the ~arY,.maleriil.1 and-I'll bet that.
if you look closely around the house,
shed, garage or other places you store
things for future use, you will find
most of. the material you need right
there at home. You will need a bUl1lzer
or bell, push button, a small trans-
former or a battery. The buzzer or bell
you select can be either 6 volt AC or
DC depending on whether you decide
to use LINE VOLTAGE (120 Volts), or
a battery 8OUl'Ce (6 Volt DC). The p1,lsh
button Is '8 simple device you can pick
up at most hardware stores and if you
dec1de to use line voltage yOUl' trans-
former should be 120 VQlt primary to
24 Volt secondl\l'Y. Some bell wire will
be needed and- I expect you can find
this with your train set. Altogether
your expense will be'about $5.00, BlIt
remember this is all material that you
can use around the house after you
:finish your experIment.
Let's start by mountJ.ng our equIp-
ment on a 18" x 24" 'piece of If-l'' ply-
wood or some simUar material, Mount
the bell in the upper left corner, the
push button at the top center and the
transformer directly below at the bot-
tom center of the board, This wlll al-
low us plenty at room in which to grow
as we add to the project,
Wire this unit as shown In the sket_ch
below in this article. Make sure you
have good connections and be sure
your wires from the transformer to
your power source are well connected'
and well taped. A good extension cord
from yOul' transtormer lead wires to
your power source is vE!ry importlll!-t.
Maybe you'd better check this connec-
tion with Dad b&lore you plug it ln,
Some Dont's About
Your Home Wiring

DON'T put in a new fuse or reset the
circuit breaker without first discon-
necting lamps and appliances which
were in use when the service went off.
Otherwise, you may blow the new fuse,
cause the circuit breaker.to"trip_ 01,1t
immediately,
DON'T blame the manufacturer or
the dealer if your iron, toaster, electric
sauce pan, etc, seem to heat slowly.
Have your wiring checked first.
DON'T change a fuse when your
hands are wet or when you are stand-
ing on a damp floor, and don't poke
your fingers into the opening.
DON'T use appliances, especially
portable ones, anywhere in reach of
the bathtub. This includes radios,
DON'T allow the installation of out-
door outlets, or outlets in areas where
the floor may become wet (basement
or garages), without a grounding con-
nection. Be sure the appliances con-
nected to them have a similar ground~
