Ray ViUyard, <br />chairman of the San Luis Volley rural <br />electric makes the presentation. <br /> <br />lIIewEfficiency At <br />Sangre De Cristo <br /> <br />The massive structure of steel that is <br />visible from 'the highway north of <br />Buena Vista, is the much talked about, <br />and' greatly needed substation for San- <br />gre De Cristo Electric Ass'n. <br />Irby Construction 'Company of Jack- <br />son, MississIppi, was awarded the con- <br />u.act when the bids were opened June <br />7, 1961. Irby Construction Co., was <br />detained in starting and did not arrive <br />in Buena Vista until September 1st. <br />In approximately two weeks the sub- <br />station Was erected. On Sept. 15th it <br />was energized for testing purposes, and <br />on September- 19th. it went into full <br />ope.ration. <br />At a ceremony Tuesday Sept. 19, <br />1961 Paul Huntley, President of Sangre <br />D'e Cristo Electric Ass'n.: closed the <br />switch, energlzing the substation and <br />making the neW"service to Buena' Vista <br />and the surrounding area a realitJ<-. <br />The new 3,750 KVA substation with <br />2.81 miles of H5 KV' transmission lines, <br />will greatly increase the efficiency of <br />SangJ:e De Cristo Electric. The new <br />substation wlll serve the Town of <br />Buena Vista, north and south of Buena <br />Vista, and the Colorado State Reforma_ <br />tory, with a cut in electricity line loss <br />from 18 percent to 14 percent. <br />Those present at the ceremony were <br />Normal1 S. Inc., are <br />reported to be half-way completed with <br />the new Creede project. The project <br />calls for the installation of about eight <br />miles of lines into the :Mineral County <br />Seat town to serve some 300 users. <br />'Work on the project was financed by <br />a $427,000 REA loan recently approved <br />for the San Luis Valley Association. <br />The other portion of the loan will be <br /> <br />Page 7 <br /> <br />used by the group for normal expan-' <br />&ion into areas served by their lines, <br />The San Luis Valley rural electric <br />was issued a franchise, by the Creede <br />Town Board after they found out thst <br />the costs 01 remodeling and updating <br />their municipally owned plant would <br />cost more than the city budget- could <br />stand. <br />The municipally owned plant pro- <br />vided only the minimum service to <br /> <br />the users in the mining-town area. The <br />mines in the area operated on their <br />own power plants. <br />Crews from San Luis Valley have <br />been making the connections as rapidly <br />as possible and the entire changover is <br />expected sometime this fall. <br />Included in the project will be setting <br />up several new street lights in this <br />mountain situated town. <br /> <br />;'~', <br /> <br />~~ <br />, <br /> <br />WelL DONE-The annual top award for tlie best entry in 'the Youth Elec_ <br />tric Foil' went to .BUI Rooks of Grand Junction. The ploque w!.ls presented by <br />President William Byers. Bill developed his drill press from old form machine <br />parts and junk, with exception of the chuck which had to be purchased. Total <br />cost wos $23.50, plus the motor. Other plaque winners were, Lorry Volber_ <br />ding of Elba route, Akron; and Carl Critchfjeld of Vernon, . <br /> <br /> <br />Virgil Wagner, and Ronald Wadleigh, both of the San Luis Valley inspect <br />the boiler unit in .the Creede Municipal Power plant thot will be reploced by <br />oil-new rural electric power.
