Cultural Studies <br />Technical Report <br />Cultural srudies will be performed at the five <br />existing or proposed reservoir locations, three of <br />which may be enlarged (pueblo Reservoir, <br />Turquoise Lake and Lake Meredith), one with no <br />physical changes planned but with changes in <br />operation planned (Twin Lakes), and one new <br />reservoir site (Williams Creek Reservoir). Four <br />tasks will be completed for this phase of the <br />project: familiarization with the project areas, <br />searches of the site files of state and federal <br />agencies, production of a tepon, and production <br />of culrural resource maps, <br /> <br />4.1 Project Familiarization. Becoming familiar <br />with the five project alternatives and their <br />associated facilities will involve visits to each <br />reservoir location, Available literarure <br />concerning proposed activities at each locale <br />will be studied. <br />4.2 File Searches. Searches of the site files of <br />state agencies (Colorado Historical Society) <br />and federal agencies (U.S. Forest Service- <br />Leadville and Pueblo, Bureau of Reclamation- <br />Denver and Loveland; and Bureau of Land <br />Management-Canon City) will be made to <br />identify recorded culrura! resources within <br />project area boundaries, Site derails, including <br /> <br />G>~ <br /> <br />site type, location, and assessed eligibility for <br />inclusion on the :--lational Register of Historic <br />Places, will be gathered. Data on location and <br />type of culrural resource investigations <br />conducted within the locales of the various <br />project altematives will be recorded. When <br />appropriate, copies will be made of the <br />culrural resource reports relating to these <br />projects. <br />4.3 Mapping. Maps will be prepared on a USGS <br />base showing the overlap of previously <br />conducted studies with the project <br />alternatives and the locations of historic and <br />prehistoric sites within each srudy area. <br />4.4 Technical Report. A report detailing the <br />results of the investigations will be prepared. <br />The report will describe the methods used for <br />the work; present a swnmary of the prehistory <br />and history of the regions included in the <br />srudy; and provide a swnmary of the file <br />search results and tables describing the <br />recorded cultural reSOUIees within each <br />project alternative. Finally, the previously <br />conducted work will be assessed so that <br />recommendations can be made concerning the <br />types and extent of cultural resources work <br />required to complete the environmental <br />permitting process. <br /> <br />Task 4 - Products <br />. Analytical techniques will <br />include: 1) a teview of existing reports and other <br />literature on the locality to identify past <br />socioeconomic conditions and trends; 2) field <br />visits to the localities and interviews with persons <br /> <br />10 <br />
