<br />41S7 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />and a thin mantle of glaciill outwash covering the broad plains <br />of the Dry Union Formation (Flgure 111-6). The lateral and <br />terminal moraines formed natural lakes such as the original <br />Turquoise Lake and Twin Lakes. The wa ter soon overflowed the <br />terminal moraine eroding a channel and leaving a natura] lake <br />with a stream flowing through it. Natural climatic conditions <br />and erosion have left the landscape above an elevation of about <br />11,000 feet dotted with small alpine lakes, meadows, and <br />marshes. However, a deficiency of moisture has left the glacial <br />outwash covered plains below an eleva tion of about 9000 feet <br />generally void of dense forest vegetation. <br /> <br />The streams of the east flank of the Sawatch Range are quite <br />similar to those of the west flank. Many of the streams <br />originate from the small alpine lakes and are characterized by <br />high late spring and early summer flows cascading down the steep <br />rocky channels then receding to a more stabilized native or base <br />flo~ for the remainder of the year~ However, these streams do <br />not generally flow through broad meadows forming meandering <br />channels, as those of the west slope do. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The remainder of the Project features and the service area are <br />generally located along the boundary of the Southern Rocky <br />Mountain Province and the Great Plains Province from Canon City <br />to Colorado Springs and within the broad shallow Arkansas River <br />Valley of the Colorado Piedmont plains eastward to Lamar, <br />Colorado. The drainage basins are generally large with gently <br />rolling hills, local scarps, and a local relief generally <br />limited to less than 100 feet. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />The stream channels draining the large basins generally have <br />broad fla t bot toms and shallow bu t steep banks. The s treamflows <br />are intermittent, gpn~r~11~ with low [lourl~ dur~ng m~d winter <br />and early spring and generally no flows during the summer <br />except for flash floods resulting from localized high intensity <br />storms of short duration occurring over part or all of the <br />drainage basin. <br /> <br />3. Geology <br /> <br />a. Regional Geology <br /> <br />The Fryingpan-Arkansas Project is as diverse geologically as <br />it is topographically.
