HIGHLIGHTS OF 1983 OPERATIONS

r""'
]

Streamflows throughout the Western Division System were much above normal
and exceeded early season forecasts for nearly all watersheds.

Late heavy mountain snows and above normal summer precipitation produced
record runoff volumes at many locations.

Cool temperatures during May and early June delayed snowmelt, causing~runoff
peaks to occur about two weeks later than norma'l.
. \

Hot. sUl1l11er temperatures developed by late June, producing rapid snowmelt
which quickly raised river levels to near flood stage.

Controlled spills occurred at many reservoirs including Green Montain,
Granby, Boysen, Seminoe, Kortes, and Pathfinder. High rates of controlled
bypass releases were also made below Glendo Reservoir on the North Platte
River.

The near record amount of runoff produced nearly 871,000 acre-feet of water
in excess of full ownership storage capacity in the North Platte River,
Basin above Guernsey Reservoir.

.~,

Glendo Reservoir storage reached the second highest record content while
using 82 percent of the exclusive flood pool space. '"

A controlled, forced spill of Pathfinder Reservoir was. initiated on June
28. Water flowed over the natural rock spillway for 41 consecutive days.

North Platte River flows through the city of Casper were regulated at or
near 8,000 ft3/s, causing only minor damage.

Although not an authorized project purpose, Seminoe and Pathfinder
Reservoir operations prevented the occurrence of significant property
damage.

."-'
