I tD3310

I~
I ---

I

I

Purpose

,

DROUGHTS AND THEIR EFFECT ON THE WATER SUPPLIES
FOR THE CITY OF FORT COLLINS, COLORADO

I. Introduction

There are three primary purposes of the drought study for the City of
Fort Collins:

I

I

I

I

I

I

I

1.

To determine the characteristics of extreme droughts that can be

expected to occur on the Cache la Poudre River, on the average

once every 20, 50, 100, and 500 years.

2.

To estimate the impact of typical 1-in-20 to l-in-500 droughts on

the City's water supply, using both present and future demand

levels (the impacts are to consider supplemental water that can

be imported to the basin from surrounding watersheds in addition

to the City's water rights on the Poudre).

3.

To propose and analyze various water supply strategies that could

be adopted by the City for dealing with and designing for future

droughts.

Organization of report

The report is organized into five major sections. The first section

is the introduction which includes a discussion on the definition of

drought and a brief summary of the pro~edures used in the study. The next

three sections correspond to the study's major work tasks. Section II

deals with the determination of extreme drought characteristics and the

selection of typical 1-in-20. 1-in-50, 1-in-l00, and 1-in-500 droughts.

Section III covers the methodology used to determine the impact of the

selected droughts on the City's water supply. Section IV contains an

analysis of various drought strategies that could be adopted by the City.

The last section contains a summary of the study's conclusions and recom-

mendations.

I

I

I

I

I

I

I

RE:~OURCE: CON~ULTt\NT~ INC

1
