, I r , , i r ) I I I I ~ ,'r (' G :".,J~ CHAPTER 2 MAIN AQUEDUCT THE term "main aqueduct" is used to designate that portion of the Colorado River aqueduct project between the Intake pumping plant on Lake Havasu and the terminal storage reservoir known as Lake Mathews in the Cajalco basin. The prin- cipal work on this portion of the project during the fiscal year con- sisted of testing, conditioning, and protecting the finished struc- tures and features; pomping Colorado River water to complete the filling of Lake Mathews; completion of installation of lightning arresters on the 230,000 volt transmission line; purchase and par- tial erection at each pumping plant and camp of a stand-by gas- engine driven generator to supply power for emergency use; con- structing additional cottages to provide living accommodations for married employees who had been forced by lack of District quarters to occupy with their families temporary shacks devoid of all con- veniences; extension of the District telephone line to the water softening plant at La Verne and removal of the switchboard from Hayfield pumping plant to the La Verne plant; and operation of the salvage yard at the Banning headquarters in conjunction with the removal of heavy equipment from the San Jacinto camps and clean-up of the areas subsequent to disposal of the buildings, District Roads The District paved roads consist of the river road from Earp to Parker Darn and Gene camp, with its branch road to the Intake pumping plant, and stub roads from county or state highways to Iron Mountain, Eagle Mountain, and Hayfield plants. These roads were kept in good condition by the crews of the pumping system and aqueduct patrol and maintenance.
