I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
.'
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

B9. Weather M:x:Ii.fication/SurPlus Flows

Weather IOOCIi.fication could augment Colorado River watershed rI.U1off by up to

about 2,000,000 acre-feet per year. These flows could be used to satisfy

~can Treaty water requiremants. Since ad:li.tional water would be in the

river system, the frequency of excess flows could increase and reduce the

periods when the YDP production would be required. A 6 to B year

inplemantation would be required at a cost of about $26 million. Annual

cost of an operational weather IOOCIi.fication program would be about $12

million to $16 million. This augrrentation would allow the generation of

about 1.7 billion kiloWatt hours (kWh) of electrical energy equal to about

$34 million in pm<er benefits. The ad:li.tional water would reduce the

salinity of the water at Inperial Dam by about 110 p/m creating benefits of

about $62 million per year.

Advantages :

o Increases total water SlWly in the Colorado River Basin.

o Could reduce the frequency of required YDP operation and reduce the

a=:npanying operating costs.

o Power benefits would be $34 million.

o Salinity benefits would be $62 million.

Disadvantages:

o Plan nay encounter fonniclable environm:mtal and substantial

institutional problems.

o Ownership and right to use new water nay be disputed.

n ~J '- "\ ~ ';' ,. ~ ... ~ ~ ~:~ ~. .f
f" ~~4 :~: )._ t; :~. ;.i.'~ ~: :~ ":~ /~~~ ~ { y

1 '1,,/

~~ ~'l~.::~ (.~ ~ n ~1
i.:" ?-, ',;~~ I '\. ~ 0\ i ~:'~l
L ,_ ;,' u ,.~' .
