The largest acreage is in Colorado. but there is a <br />significant acreage in each of the other three states. <br /> <br />Mean annual precipitation ranges from 15 to 30 inches and the frost- <br />free period is relatively short. There is usually a frost every <br />month within some of the map units. but others have frost-free per- <br />iods as long as 125 to 150 days at certain locations. Elevations <br />are mostly between 7.000 and 11.000 feet where the mean annual tem- <br />perature is less than 470 F. <br /> <br />Montane Forest is the characteristic cover type. but Mountain Brush <br />is extensive and there is some pinyon-juniper. <br /> <br />These soils are in the mountainous parts of the basin and are on <br />slopes that usually range from 3 to 75 percent. <br /> <br />1II - 17 <br /> <br />
