La Verkin Springs, about 2,400 feet upstream from the old highway
bridge at the mouth of Timpoweap Canyon. It would be concrete with
an overflow spillway crest 150 feet in length.
The structure would divert riverflows of up to 1,200 ft3/ s .
Riverflows exceeding 1,200 ft3/s, would spill over the upper diversion
structure, an event expected to happen no more than 2 percent of
the time. The structure was designed for a floodflow of 23,500 ft3/s.
2. Lower Diversion Structure. As designed, this feature
would be located across the Virgin River immediately below the
La Verkin Springs, downstream from the old bridge. It would be a
reinforced-concrete structure with eight slide gate bays. With the
gates closed, the collected spring water would rise about 6 feet above
streambed, allowing gravity diversion of the collected spring water to
the desalting plant.
During normal operation, the gates of the lower structure would
be closed. However, when riverflows exceed the capacity of the
bypass and begin spilling over the upper diversion structure the
gates of the lower structure would be raised.
3. Bypass Pipeline. A buried reinforced-concrete pipeline
would be installed to divert normal riverflow around the La Verkin
Springs. It would run about 2,500 feet from the upper diversion
structure along the right (north) side of the river and end in a
baffled-apron drop structure just downstream of the lower diversion
structure. It would be a gravity flow 132-inch diameter pipeline with
an expected maximum capacity of 1,600 ft3/ s .
4. Feed Water Pipeline. This 36-inch corrosion resistant
pipeline would transport by gravity flow the saline spring water from
the lower diversion structure to the treatment plant. The pipeline
would be 5,700 feet long, and would parallel the riverbed except for
one buried river crossing,
5. La Verkin Springs Desalting Plant. This facility would be
located on a lO-acre tract of land on the south side of the river just
west of the town of La Verkin, Utah. The plant would utilize a

002518

9
