An appropriate sign perpetuates this bit of <br />Americana for pooterity. <br /> <br />7. Cooperative Studies and Activities: <br />(a) Article VIII G (J) of Arkansas River Compact requires the <br />Administration to cooperate with the Chief Official of each of <br />the states of Colorado and Kansas charged with the ad- <br />ministration of water rlghta in their respective States, and with <br />the Federal agencies in systematically determining and <br />correlating the facta pertaining to the flow and diversion of the <br />water of the Arkansas River and to the operation and siltation of <br />John Martin Reservoir and other related structure. Article VIII <br />G (2) requests the Director of the United States Geological <br />Survey, the Commissioner of the United States Bureau of <br />Reclamation, and the Chief of the Engineers, United Stales <br />Anny, to cooperate and collaborate with the Administration and <br />with appropriate State officials in such determinations and <br />correlations of stream flow and related data, Under the By- <br />Laws of the Administration, these cooperative studies and ac- <br />tivities are assigned to the Engineering Committee of the <br />Administration. <br />(b) During the year covered by this report the Administration has <br />received excellent cooperation from all agencies referred to in <br />the foregoing provisions of the Compact. The United States <br />Geological Survey has continued the operation of the compact <br />gaging stations and the analysis and compilation of the <br />hydrologic data presented in this report and used in the ad- <br />ministration of the Compact. The Corps of Engineers continued <br />to operate the conservation pool of John Martin Reservoir in <br />accordance with the terms of the Compact and the orders of the <br />Administration, <br /> <br />8. Water Supply, Reservoir Operation, and Hydrologic Data <br />The winter storage season for John Martin Reservoir began at 12:00 <br />p.m. October 31, U177, with the reservoir empty since AugUst 26, 1977. <br />The first call for river flow by Colorado was made at 12;01 a.m. <br />November I, and maintained until 8:30 a.m. December 9, 1977. The <br />gates were closed until March 20, 1978 when they were opened to <br />satisfy a Colorado river flow demand, This held through to April 13, <br />1978. <br />Initial release of conservation water was made with 6,970 acre-feet <br /> <br />-8- <br />
