tee from 1964-1970).

runner-up in First Edison Scholarship Contest (this
was a search among high school students in the U. S.
for a "replacement" of Thomas A. Edison); one of a
dozen of Dr. A. Casagrande's former graduate students
(about 2000) selected to write a chapter in a book
in his honor).

38 years civil Engineering experience: 9 years with
U. S. Corps of Engineers; 2 years with o. J. Porter
Co.; 1 year with City of Stockton; 12.5 years with
Calif. Division of Highways; 4.5 years with Calif.
Dept. of Water Resources; last 9 years as private
consultant.

A large amount of my time has been involved with the
analysis of subsurface conditions for earth dams,
fills, and other structures; planning and general
supervision of field and laboratory programs; carrying
out theoretical studies needed for design, develop-
ing engineering designs, and preparing plans and
specifications for projects having foundation problems.

Analyzing seepage problems and developing drainage
systems has been a major activity. I also have de-
voted a good deal of time and effort to the problems
of building fills on soft mud and peat foundations.

As a consultant my primary activity has been to analyze
problems and give technical advice to clients. Also,
I have worked as an "expert witness" for clients.
One such assignment involved substantial preparatory
work on a case that was settled out of court.

Currently on consulting boards reviewing earth dams for
safety (primarily from seepage and drainage aspects).
