1480

Clallification of Public Lands. Lower
Colorado River
The Bureau of Land Management con-
ducted public hearings during 1970 in Nee-
dles, California, and Yuma, Arizona, on a
proposed classification of public lands along
the lower Colorado River and the Bill Wil-
liams River in Arizona for multiple use man-
agement. The area totals 424,729 acres, of
which 268,521 acres are in California and ad-
jacent to, but not contiguous to, the main-
stream of the Colorado River,
At the hearings it was explained that the
lands were considered to be valuable for pub-

44

lic uses, on a multiple use basis, and that pre-
vious uses for homesteading and land sales
had proved unworkable, After consideration
of all comments, the Bureau of Land Manage-
ment announced on November 9, 1970, that
the classification for multiple use manage-
ment had been adopted. The classification
has the effect of segregating the lands from
appropriation under the agricultural land
laws and from sale, but does not prescribe
specifically how the lands will be used.
Therefore, the effect of the classification, if
any, on water use along the river cannot be
determined at this time.
