.---0

, . ,

.

s~fic;:ient elevation is available for the sprink.ler irrigation systeJ:l. to be

run by gravity head. Pipelines carrying water under pressure from the main

canal to turn outs. in the fields take the place of the pumping plants.

.
.

Thus, no irrigation pumping and power plant would be needed. The implica-:-
tions are that the ownership and operating.costs related to a pumping and power

plant typical of sprinkler irrigation systems would be excluded. This is

very important particularly in light of the ever rising costs of fossil fuels.

. Estimates of water requirements by crop and by month are needed to

calculate. diversion requirements for irrigation of the proposed 7,500 acres

of irrigable lands in the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Reservation. Present

proposalS'ror delivery facilities are either "through an existing canal or

through a separate new canal serving the Reservation. ,The estimation of

water requirement is based on the Jensen-Haise Method~ and includes crop

~ - - - -
~...... - ;;---
"evapotranspiration, effecti verainfall, and leaching requiren:ents. Net

.
.

diversion requirements are developed for two alternative stations at which

the water is measured: one at McPhee Reservoir outlet and another at Towaoc

within the Indian Reservation Boundary.

-
1.7 Farmstead

--

Since, as has been pointed out earlier, isolated ~mall tracts charac-

terize the lands proposed for irrigation, farmstead location was assumed to

'-

be on lands outside the 7,500 acres set aside for irrigation. Allowance for

roads, which is a negligible fraction, could also come from the outlying

lands .

1.8 Prices Received and" Paid

.

Prices used for agricultural products in the budgets are those received

in Colorado, in most cases MOntezuma County, in 1974.
