It is a participating project of the Colorado River <br /> <br />Storage Project enacted April II, 1956 (Public Law 84-485). <br /> <br />The primary objective of the Dolores Project is to provide new and <br />. <br />. <br /> <br />supplemental irrigation of agricultural lands and to increase the municipal <br /> <br />.. and industrial water supply for the communities of Cortez, Dove Creek, and <br /> <br />Towaoe. Important Benefits would be realized for recreation, fish and wild- <br /> <br />life enhancements, flood control, water quality and area redevelopment. <br /> <br />Supplemental irrigation water supplies would;be delivered to 26,290 <br /> <br /> <br />acres in Montezuma Valley area located in the central portion of the project <br /> <br /> <br />area. 'Full irrigation water supplies would be provided to 27,855 acres in <br /> <br />the Dove Creek area in the northwest and 7,500 acres in the Ute Mountain <br /> <br />Ute Indian Reservation southwest of Towaoc. Municipal and industrial water <br /> <br />would be furnished to Cortez, Dove Creek and the Ute Mountain Ute Indian <br /> <br />Tribe at Towaoc. <br /> <br />". <br /> <br />'. <br /> <br />Primary regulation of the Dolores River would be provided at McPhee <br /> <br />Reservoir. This storage facility will have a capacity ~f 38l,100-acre <br /> <br />feet of which 229,100 is active. McPhee Reservoir would be formed on the <br /> <br />eastern edge of the project area by McPhee Dam and Great Cut Dike. <br /> <br />Project water would-be distributed bya canal and lateral system <br />constructed as part of the project. The Dove Creek Canal and Towaoc Canal <br /> <br />would be the major project canals. The former would receive water pumped from <br /> <br />. McPhee Reservoir at Great Cut Dike by the Great Cut Pumping Plant, and <br /> <br />extend about 40 miles northwest to Monument Creek Reservoir. The Towaoc <br /> <br />Canal would receive its water through the Dolores Tunnel and extends about 42 <br />, <br /> <br />miles in a general southwest direction until it reaches all the area outlined <br />for irrigation within the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation. All main canals are <br /> <br />proposed to be open and earth lined. <br /> <br />~ <br />
