INTRODUCTION

1.1 .Nature and Purpose of Study

The purpose of this study is to present estimates of irrigation water

-diversion requirements and agricultural economic analysis relative to cost

and returns for alternative combinations of major.field crops and for cow-

~calfproduction operations on irrigable lands within the Ute Mountain Ute

Indian Reservation, Dolores Irrigation Unit in southwestern Colorado. On

-the "basis of existing data, this ~eport provides evidence toward justifica-

tion for the construction, operation and maintenance of conveyance facili-

ties and related irrigation structures to deliver water to sprinkler

irrigate irrigable land. The sprinkler irrigation system will derive

sufficient head from gravity due to elevation. This project is part or

The Ute Mountain Ute Indian Irrfgation Project, Dolores Irrigation

Unit has been outlined for development of 7,500 acres selected from a

total irrigable Tribal land of 10,003 acres. The area is located south-
west of Towaoc, Colorado.

1.2. Dolores Project: Brief Outline of Objectives and Development Plan
The Dolores Irrigation Project is a proposed participating project
in the upper Colorado River Storage Project. It is located in southwestern

" Colorado in Dolores and Montezuma Counties (see Map #1) and will utilize the

Water resources of the Dolores River.

Construction, operation and maintenance of the Dolores Project was
~authorized by the Colorado River Basin Project Act of September 1968
