<br />Preliminary InvestigRtions <br /> <br />PROPOSED PI1TE RIVER IRRIGATION PROJECT. <br /> <br />La Plata County, Colorado <br /> <br />DESCRIPTION <br /> <br />The proposed Pine River Project plans for development of 15,000. acres <br /> <br />, <br />of land .by ne,{ and supplemental irrigation in the l^iestern part of the <br /> <br />organized Pine River Irrigation District. .This District is located <br /> <br /> <br />in the basin of Pine (Los Pinos) River in the southeastern part of <br /> <br />La Plata County, in southwestern Colorado on the New.Mexico State line. <br /> <br />;t'he Pine River Irrigation District, as organized under state law, in- <br /> <br />eludes some 69,000 acres of irrigable land and is within the Consoli- <br /> <br />dated Ute Indian Reservation, except for a narrow strip of valley land <br /> <br />extending north from the boundary of the reservation upstream along <br /> <br />both banks of Pine River some 10 miles to the just completed Valleci to <br /> <br />Dam and Reservoir. This reservoir is eXt}ected to store 126,000 acre- <br /> <br />feet of.water to supplement an equal ronount of direct stream flow water <br /> <br />to furnish full irrigation to all irriga:ble 19.nds in the District. <br /> <br />A small northwestern extension of the district extends west over into <br /> <br />the water shed of Florida River but does not include any of the proposed <br /> <br />project area. A small southeastern. extension reaches into Archuleta <br /> <br />County, which adjoins La Plata County on the east, but does not include <br /> <br />any of the proposed project area. <br /> <br />Pine River flows south from Vallecito Reservoir through the irrigated <br /> <br />lands of the Ute Indians, which occupy the middle part of the D.istrict. <br /> <br />L_. <br />
