<br />It ~ be noted from an examination of the above balance sheet that <br />the only returns to the share oropper are found in a low-standard liv- <br />ing for his family. After allowing for depreoiation, repairs and re- <br />plaoement af his capital goods he receives no interest return on his <br />capital investiment and no oash return for his labor beyond a poor liv- <br />ing for his family. ~his about represents the status of 35 per cent of <br />the farmers in the northern part of the area who are Hjust getting by." <br /> <br />Oomparison of a Dry Farm and an Irrigated Farm of Same Soil Classes <br />Another 35 per cent of the farmers in the project area are not making a <br />living and depend upon part-time WPA employment and sometimes various <br />forms of direct relief assistance. The operating status of such a dependent <br />low income farmer-owner is shown in the first part of the following com- <br />parative summary of two farm plans, whioh show for a 280 farm unit, its <br />produotive capaoity for the support of a farm family as a typioal small <br />dry farm, and its productivity as an irrigated farm. <br /> <br />Dependent Farmer on'a 280-acre dry land Farm <br /> <br /> <br />Dry Farm: ~hirty aores wheat produces 510 bu. of which 210 bu. are used <br /> <br /> <br />for feed and seed and 300 bu. are sold for $195. Thirty acres are in <br /> <br /> <br />summer fallow; 25 acres of class 1 land in dry land alfalfa meadow, which <br /> <br /> <br />produces 25 ton of h~, used for feed; 25 acres are in dry land, native <br /> <br /> <br />grass and drun-outd alfalfa pasture. Ris AAA compliance p~s him $40. <br /> <br /> <br />Garden, largely corn, potatoes and beans ocoupies three acres, 117 acres <br /> <br /> <br />are good class 2 soil sage brush grazing land, and 50 acres are roe~ wood- <br /> <br /> <br />land and waste ground. He has a limited off-and-on grazing permit on <br /> <br /> <br />the National Forest. He feeds and pastures 55 sheep, one cow and calf. <br />
