resettled into the proposed Pine River Project area.

A little w~s north and west of Durango in adjacent Montezuma Oounty,

about 50 miles by highw~ from the proposed Pine River project, new

irrigation development is progressing in the Mancos Basin which is an-

other part of the greater San Juan Basin. The Mancos area is one of

the oldest agricultural settlements in southwestern Oolorado. It 'ie

an old Mormon colony centering at the town of l'iancos. There have devel-

oped in this old community conditions'of overcrowded agricultural

population and inadequate farm units, decreased feed bases, and over-

stocking and depletion of range lands that call for the resettlement

of farmers from it onto other irrigated lands in the region, if sueh

are availalle. The Farm Security Administration is now planninq; for the

readjustment, resettlement and rehabilitation of these farmers.

It is believed that, after providing for farm families now living in

the area of the proposed Pine River Project, there will be sufficient

irrigated farm land with s~pplemental dry lands available for resettle-

ment to about provide for the landless families, that would desire re-
settlement into the proposed Pine River project from the four areas just
described; southwestern Archuleta Oounty, the San Juan National forest,
the La Plata project a.rea.and the Mancos farms area.

r

1.'
"
?'
,

,~
,.;

.~.~

" ~
p

;~
