Preliminary Investigations of the Proposed Pine River Irrigation Project
Summary

This project proposes to use the storage waters of the recently completed

Vallecito Dam and Reservoir for supplementary irrigation and new irrigation

of approximately 15,000 acres of class 1 and class 2 lands in the western

part of the organized Pine River Irrigation District in the southeastern

part of L~ Plata County, Oolorado.

The lands included in the projeot area are ,mesa lands of rolling or somewhat
broken topograp~, lying on the terraced benches on the west side of Pine
River Valley. The lower valley lands along the east side of the project area,
located on both sides of the river, are irrigated by the consolidated Utes.
The foothills of the Mesa Mountains form the western boundary of the pro-
posed project area and of the irrigation district.

The proposed project area contains approximately 34,000 acres, some of which
will be eliminated when engineering work for location of canals is completed.

Some 12,451 acres of these lands (of which 1,200 acres are now irrigated,

1,800 aDre~ are irrigable but now cultivated by dry farming and 9,451 acres

are new irrigable lands) can be aoquired for resettlement at prices ranging

from $4.50 per acre for unbroken sagebrush land to $40 per acre for lands

that are now irrigated. Preliminary estimates, subject to change and oor-

rection, show that for new lands to be placed under irrigation the average

per acre costs will be as follows:
