With the proposed development of the area, its agricultural economy be-
cause of lack of market outlet for farm produce must be based mostly
upon dairyililg and. feeding farm livestock; hogs, farm flocks of sheep and
limited beef stock. Except for lack of market the area would lend itself
well to production of truck crops, seed and. green peas, other cannililg
produce, fruit and other perishables. Many fine farm-home orchards are
produoing splendidly in the area. These matters will be discussed in
more detail further along under the subject of RAgricultural Information.R
Laok of irrigation water has prevented following of such farming practices
and has contributed, with lack of grazing lands for a range-livestock in-
dustry and laok of market outlet for cash crope, to the present plight
of the farmers within the area.

In the southern part of the area, now entirely without irrigation, are

13 dry-land. farmers, of which nine are Spanish-American. ~e other four

are individualists who cannot be a.veraged. One, with the best set of

farm improvements, farms also an irrigated farm in the northern part of

the district and comes down into the southern part to put in a dry-land

crop each s\lllllller, another is a local miner who dry farms on a small scale

as a side line, another is a Rsuitoase farmer" who (lame in the last year,

guessed the season of heaviest summer rainfall in years, put in a dry-

land crop of about 150 acres of wheat in a flat basin between the mesas,

complied with AAA, and produced this year (1941) between 4,000 and 5,000

bushels of wheat. (i.e., some 30 bu. per acre). The Spanish-American

families are in distressed circumstances. All are on farms of inadequate

acreage for dry-farming and lack range for sheep or other stock.
