As the Nation's principal c.onservation agency, the Department
of the tnterior has basic responsibilities for water, fish, wildlife,
mineral, land, park, and recreational resources. Indian Terri-
torial affairs are other major concerns of America's "Department
of Natural Resources".

The Department works to assure the wisest choice in managing
all our resources so each will make its full contribution to a better
United States - - now and in the future.

FOREWORD

This is one of a continuing series of reports designed to present
accounts of progress in saline water conversion and the economics
of its application. Such data are expected to contribute to the long-
range development of economical processes applicable to low-cost
demineralization of sea and other saline water.

Except for minor editing, the data herein are as contained in
a report submitted by the contractor. The data and conclusions
given in the report are essentially those of the contractor and are
not necessarily endorsed by the Department of the Interior. It is
emphasized that the results in terms of specific desalting processes
and processing costs are based on preliminary engineering and
economic evaluations. Final determination of a specific process
for application to the desalting of a community water supply would
depend on the results of more detailed engineering and economic
studies.

ii
