00
...~
C(J
C'J
C)
c:

and Lateral 2 the land is very level. The result is that
water from the point of jtUlcture can be carried up (as
well as down) Lateral 2. In other words, water brought
to the junction point by the Cerro Ditch can be carried
northeasterly up Lateral 2 to where Laterals J-2 and
J-3 distribute the water to the lands to be irrigated
in the Jaroso colony.
Ai can be seen by reference to Exhibit C,the
Use of the Cerro Ditch to bring water to the Seroso
colony results ina shorter carriage Qf the water than
if the water Wer.. left in the ri"sr and carried down
to where Lateral 2 leaves the r1\<er. The saving in
carriage distance is even greater by the Uee of the
Cerra Ditch than if the water is diVerted by the Acequia
Madre, Manzanares or Yadriles Ditches and then let
hack:lhio the Costilla TIi Vel' at the point where La tel'al 2
leaves the Costilla aiveI'.
By using the Cerro Ditch, therefore, to
bring the ,water trom the Costilla RiVer to the Jaroso
COlony, a considerable amount of water, is saved through
decreasing evaporation and seepage loss. And, almost
eVer since the construction of the Cerro Ditch, this is
the methcd that has been used for bringing the Costilla
River _tar to the Jaroso colony. On eff~ct, of course,
what the Water company has been doing has, been to bring
about a change of point of diversion of part of it. Acequia
l.tadre, Manzanares and Madriles "..tel" from the original
headgates of such ditches up to the intake of the'Cerro
--1
Ditcj

In the years succeeding 192a, it also developed

that the Costilla River water supply (just as the Culehra

River water supply) had been over-estimated.
