In order
to expedite the planning studies, WPRS awarded a contract
for the feasibility 1ev~1 studies on the Meeker Dome Unit
to CHZM-Hi1l. Another contract ($1.0 million) was awarded
to URS Corporation, Denver, in September to evaluate various
alternatives for the G1enwood-Dotsero Springs feasibility
investigations.

For the Big Sandy Unit, three of eleven alternative
Soil Conservation Service (SCS) studies show a favorable
benefit-cost ratio and significant salinity reduction but
opposition to each plan was substantial. The State opposed
the use of an evaporation pond because of the loss of 13,500
acre-feet of water annually. Energy companies have indicated
an interest in use of Big Sandy water for coal-related energy
development. Further study of the industrial use option in
concert with other possibilities is required. A WPRS award
of a contract for professional services is anticipated in

May 1981 to complete feasibility study.

The Lower Virgin River study is continuing to expand

needed data gathering efforts. Desert Research Institute

has a contract for a water-salt budget study.

-12-
