The lower system can be operated as one unit or separately.
Separate operation will allow the Forest Service to condition (or restrict)
seasonal use of the facility as outlined below. This gondola was described and
analyzed in FEIS Alternatives E and G. Associated with this gondola I I authorize
a warming hut facility (not to exceed 3,000 sq. ft.) that will include restrooms
and ski patrol staging, but no restaurant, at the gondola I s upper terminal. This
facility was studied as part of FEIS Alternative F. The new development of the
Cafe Suzanne/Mid-mountain complex will include multiple buildings totaling
approximately 25,000 sq. ft. (excluding the gondola drive station and cabin
storage structure) as described in FEIS Alternative G. Several small "specialty"
restaurants will be built with a maximum of 850 restaurant seats. One building
in the mid-mountain complex will house an interpretive/environmental center with
displays and information about local flora, fauna, ecosystems I and historic and
prehistoric cultural information. This center will be conveniently and
prominently located to serve all visitors.

DISCUSSION

The EIS has demonstrated that Burnt Mountain offers excellent ski terrain that
logically should be part of the Snowmass Ski Area. A high-speed gondola to the
summit of Burnt Mountain will provide the visitor with an efficient, comfortable
means of accessing the entire Burnt Mountain area and the eastern side of the Elk
Camp pod. Skiers will be provided with a beautiful 360-degree view which
includes the Maroon Bells. In addition, the EIS disclosed that Burnt Mountain
has limited capacity that could be exceeded if too many skiers were delivered to
the summit. This would occur if more than one high capacity out-of-base lift
terminated on the summit.

Page . 9

RECORD OF DECISION

"
