Northern Pike

Northern Pike #40:5834 (NP583)

NP583 was captured by angling on 25 July 1996 at RM 95.1. The pool where this fish
was captured and most commonly occurred throughout the study was a small side pool
created for a water intake structure, The pool was greater than 5 feet deep in places and
had boulder and sand substrate. This pool was bordered by the river bank on one side and
a shallow riffle on all other sides. On two other occasions, NP583 was located in a
backwater habitat that occurred at the front end of a pool 0, I river miles downstream. On
another occasion NP583 was found in a backwater habitat that was located 0.4 river miles
upstream. NP583 was never located by ground crews more than 0.5 river miles from the
pool where it was captured (Figures 25 and 26).

NP583 was the only fish other than squawfish to participate in a 24-hour observation.
Although observations were only made sporadically, it is interesting to note that at 9:30
p.m, on 24 Sep. 1996 the fish was located in the pool where it was originally captured (at
RM 95.1), but by 10:45 p.m. it had moved nearly 0,2 river miles upstream. By 11:00
a.m, the next day, NP583 had returned to it's original location (Figure 27).

Northern Pike #40:5440 (NP544)

NP544 was captured by angling on 26 July 1996 at RM 78.5. By 12 Aug, 1996 this fish
had moved 0.3 river miles downstream to a backwater habitat at the front of a large pooL
The following day (13 Aug, 1996) NP544 was back in the pool where it was originally
captured. For the remainder of the study NP544 was located on each observation week in
this same pool usually inhabiting low velocity, deep water habitat (Figure 28 and 29),

Yampa River Radio Telemetry Report
Miller Ecological Consultants, tnc.

Page 32
January 23, 1997
