- 5 -

0:2190

The soils on the high ridges, underlain by high-level terrace
deposits, are very old and show a high degree of development.
Lime-cemented layers are present in most of these soils.

Range Site and Range Cover Condition.- The principal range
sites occurring in the watershed are Mountain Slope (Oak Brush-
Mountain Mahogany), Shallow Foothills (Sandstone), Foothills (High
Terrace Remnant), and Foothills (Shale). The range sites and range
condition classes in the watershed were inventoried in a reconnaissance
soil and range survey made in July 1959.

The Mountain Slope site occupies the higher portions of the
watershed and comprises about 33 per cent of the rangeland. Slopes
vary from about 40 and 45 per cent on west exposures to 20 and 40
per cent on east exposures. Most of this site is in good condition.
Grasses present include side-oats grama, western wheat, blue grama,
three-awn, and sand drop seed. Oak brush fonus as much as 50 per
cent of the cover.

The Shallow Foothills (Sandstone) site ocoupies the rocky
slopes in the middle portion of the watershed and includes about
32 per oent of the rangeland. Soils are derived primarily frem
sandstone. The site is oovered with pinyon and juniper with light
to moderate crown cover. Slopes vary fran 15 to 20 per cent with
small areas having slopes up to 55 per oent. Most of this site is
in fair condition. Grasses present include blue grama, side-oats
grama, western wheat, big bluestem, and three-awn.

The Foothills site ocoupies high-level terrace remants in the
middle portion of the watershed and includes about 16 per oent of
the rangeland. Soils are medium-textured. Part of this area is
subject to sheet erosion and deep gully outting. Slopes range
from 4 to 6 per cent. Most of this site is in fair oondition.
Grasses present inolude blue grama, western wheat, and three-awn.
Blue grama makes up the bulk of the vegetation.

The Foothills (Shale) site occupies the shaly slopes in the
lower part of the watershed and inoludes about 19 per cent of the
rangeland. Soils are primarily derived from shale and are highly
erosive. Most slopes range from 5 to 8 per cent. The site is
mostly in poor condition. Western wheat and blue grama are the
dominant grasses. other vegetation inoludes salt brush, rabbit
brush, cheat grass, oaotus, and sunflower.
