Sene water is now diverted frOl!l the Clear Fork of

Muddy Creek, a tributary of Gunnison River, and also frcrl Owens

Creek, a tributary of Buzzard Creek. Both diversions are fed fram

high areas lying south of the heae of West Divide Creek.

The lower part of the West Divide Creek drainage area is

principally dry, rocky, canyons, an~ the higher part rolling hill

country rather than truly nountainous, although it extends up to

elevation s of 11,000 feet. The cover is principally scrub oak and

brush at all elevations with timber relatively scarce.

The arrangement of the canals on West Divide Creek and its

tributaries plays a very ~portant lfirt in project water supply.

Some 700 acres of land near the Douth of Divide Creek, with decreed

water rights of early priority are not included in the project be-

cause this area usually receives sufficient return flow froD project

and other land above it to provide an adequate water supply eVen in

late SUI1IDer.

Upstream from this area and east of Divide Creek below the

junction of East and West Divide Creeks, SOl!le 1,000 acres watered

froo East Divide Creek is usually short of water in late sumcer, but

not so much so as 850 acres hif~er on East Divide Creek which has

no available return flow. The junction of these creeks is 5 miles

above their mouth in the river.

24
