~

001401

.

.

REPORT OF THE WATER RESOURCES DIVISION

U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY

September 14, 1965

Runoff for July and August was much above normal in most of the
State. In the mountainous areas the above normal flow continued
because of the snow remaining in the high mountains and the frequent
showers. Scattered thunderstorms continued over the remainder of the
State. Outstanding floods occurred in the Bear Creek and Clear Creek
drainages on July 24 and in the Arkansas River Drainage from Canyon
City to Pueblo on August 21.

Recording gages have been installed at all but 2 of the 10 gaging
stations destroyed by the June flood and we hope to have the other 2
reinstalled soon. Some of these are temporary structures that will be
replaced by permanent structures later.

Surveys for indirect measurements of peak flow of the June flood
were made at 100 sites in Colorado. These were completed in early
August. Computations are progressing slower than anticipated, partly
because of difficulties with the computer program, but preliminary
figures of peak discharge are available for about half of the sites.
A preliminary report listing all of the sites and the peak discharge
figures that are available will be released about September 25.

Sixteen new stream flow stations are to be established and 15 stations
are to be discontinued on September 30. The changes in the program are
given below:

Stations to be Established

Station Name

Cooperating Agency

1.
