Summary statements of the Corps of Engineers, National Park
Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, and Lbe Public RealLh Service
are appended as parL of this report, The Bureau of Mines prepared a
special report in January 1961 en~itled "...\fineral ResOllrces at Narrows
Reservoir Site, Ivforgo.n County, Colo." That report was revised
in September 1964 and the latter report was updated by a mem-
orandum in Oct.ober 1965, Numerous other Federal, State, and local
agencies have furnished much information and data used in the
studies for the unit. The contributions of each agency ha.ve been of
material assistance in the investigations.

A segregation of the preceding costs with respect. to reimbursa-
The Narrows unit. aren. in northeastern Colorado com prises approxi-
mately Lbe downstream half of the South PlaLte River Basin in
Colorado,
The upsLrearn half of the basin originates along the Continental
Divide at elevation approaching 14,000 feet. That area provides most
of the water supply of the basin from nat.ive supplies and from trans-
mountain importations. The basin slopes to tbe east and merges into
the Colorado piedmont area in \vhich lhe Narrows unit is located.
The South Pla.tte watershed through the piedmont section is a
broad rollinS plain through which Lhe river has formed a wide valley
of Hood plaLn5 nnd bench lands on river te.rrnces. The bench lands
are .ituated some 20 to 200 feeL higher thau Lh. flood plains, The
ri,-er has a grad.ient of 8 to 10 feeL per mile, Geologically, Lhe CoLorado
piedmonL section is classified as late maLure or old wiLh outcroppings
of shales and sandstones of the Pierre formaLion,
The Lwo most im,POrLanL SouLh Platte River tributaries of concern
to the Narrows umt are Kiowa and Bijou Creeks, 130th tributarie,
enter the river from the south, Both tributaries flow through areas
of poorly consolidated sediments and, during periods of high runoff,
contribute considem.ble quantities or sediment to tile ri\'er. Kiowa
Creek flows into the river within the Narrows Reservoir site. Bijou
Creek, however, empties int.o the river immediately downstream from
the Narrows Dam site. Numerous other tributaries, mostly inter-
mittent, enter tbe South Platte River from both the north and south
in the reach bet\veen Narrows Reservoir and the Colorado-Nebraska
boundary,
