Soil Survey for the Longmont and Greeley areas) is ~
gravelly sandy loam and loamy sand. Soils of this type hJve a low water
holding capacity, high infiltration rate and require frequent irrigJtions.
Consequently, with the usual methods of surface irrigation large amounts of '
water are unavoidably lost by deep percolation below the root zone. Generally
from 9 to 15 or more irrigations are applied to the potatoe~ which is a major
crop under the canal. The amount of water applied at each irrigation may
vary from 4 to 6 or ~ore acre-Inches per acre depending upon field conditions
and the knowledge and ability of the irrigator. Consequently, the Vlater
applied to polatoes may vary from 3 acre-feet per acre to 7 or more acre-
feet per acre. During recent years some of the farm operators in the area
have changed to the sprinkler method of irrigation and have greatly reduced
the amount of water applied.

Estimated surplus pr shprtaqe
at the canal headqate

The estimated surplus or shortage is based upon a comparison m the
canal headgate requirement, including ditch losses, and the total water
(surface water diverted plus groundwater) supply for lhe IS-year period.

The following table compares the canal headgate requirement and the
available supply and shows the amount of surplus or shortage of irrigation
water at the canal headgate.

,
