See
Table of Contents of Appendices at front of this report.

FiHmers Indeoendent Di tch

The Farmers Independent Ditch diverts water to land east of the
South Platte River and the Western Mutual Ditch and principally west of
Highway 85 between Platteville and LaSalle. ^ccording to the Farm Water
Utilization Study made for the Narrows Project the Ditch irrigates an estimated
6,194 acreS. Mr. William Gaunt, attorney and secretary for the Consolidated
Ditches Association reported 7,500 acres of irrigaled land and the water cOm-
missioner reported ,9,000 acres for 1961 and 1966. In this report the acreage
as reported by the Bureau of Reclamation is used. It is estimated that 25
percent of the area irrigated is clay loam, 5 percent loam and 70 percent is
gravelly sandy loam and loamy sand.

Potatoes are a major crop under the Farmers Independent Ditch and are
harvested relatively early (August and September). Usually the potatoes
are irrigated very frequently, often every two or three days from the time
the first irrigation is applied until shortly before harvest. The potato
producers feel this is neces5ary to produce a high quality product and Some
leading producers believe the frequent irrigation is needed to reduce soil
temperilture for the high praduction of good quality potatoes.

.'
