25

fu 1 to_n Di tch

.'

The data used for this canal has largely been compiled from information
from the Farm Water Utilization Study for the Narrows Project made by the
Bureau of Reclamation. The study covered a 15-year period from 1947 to 1961,
inclusive. Most of this information is in the form of estimates made within
various guide 1 ines and cri teria for various influencing factors. For example,
some of these critical estimates include irrigated acreage, canal losses,
amount of groundwater pumped and irrigation water requirements. Extensive
detailed studies would be required to establish more reliable or firm estimates.

The Fulton Ditch irrigates an estimated 12,013 acres of land lying east
of the South Platte River from a point about 6 miles upstream frorr, Henderson
to about 3 miles southeast of Platteville. The water commissioner for
Water District 2 reported 11,500 acres as irrigated durin~ 1961 and 1966.
Part of the irrigated aroa is river bottom land and part is located on ter-
race land. It is estimated that SO percent of the irrigated land is clay
loam, 12 percent is fine sandy loam, 25 percent is sandy loam and 13 percent
is loamy sand.

The Ful ton Di tch holds direct-flow \Va ler rights as follows:

.'

Priorlli
No. Date

8 May 1, 1865
43 July 8, 1876
51 Nov. 5, 1879
Total decreed

flmount
(cubi c - feet/second)

79.70
74.25
....?i2.2]
rights 20,' .18

H;storic~l river diversions

During the IS-year period of 1947 to 1961, inclusive, the monthly and
yearly diversion records show the following:

Acre-feet Diverted
Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Yearl y
MJximum 1,400 6,200 9,300 9,200 9,000 5,500 3,600 32,500
Minimum 0 500 3,000 2,300 2,500 200 0 18,300
Average 413 3,147 5,553 5,927 5,100 3,587 1,660 2,587

During g of the IS years (where the J lowest and 3 highest years were
eliminated) between 23,300 and 29,100 acre-feet was diverted annually.

Estimated canal losses and farm
he~dqate delivery of water

The following table shows the estimated average monthly and annual
canal losses for the IS-year period.
