It does not include solids or
dissolved material in domestic sewage or other significant pollutants
in water resources, such as silt, dissolved or suspended solids
in industrial wastewater effluents, dissolved materials in irrigation
return flows or other common water pollutants.

Solifluction terrace - A terrace formed by the movement of soil down
slopes, i.e., terraced colluvial deposits.

Spillway - Overflow channel of a dam.

Spillway stilling basin - An enlargement and deepening of the river
at the foot of a dam spillway to lower the speed of flow.

Standing crop biomass - Expressed as the total dry weight of plant and
animal matter present in a defined area at a specific point in time.

Stilling basin - An area or basin downstream from a dam used to dissipate
the energy of the flow.

Stratification - Thermal layering of water both in lakes and streams.
Lakes usually have three zones of varying temperature; they are
epilimnion - top layer: metalimnion (thermocline) is the middle
zone of rapid temperature change; and hypolimnion - bottom layer.

Subclirnax - A subfinal stage in succession in which further progression
is inhibited because of the influence of some factor other than
climatic factors.

Sublimation - The transition of a substance directly from the solid
state to the vapor state, or vice versa, without passing through
the intermediate liquid state.

Succession - The replacement of one kind of community by another,
progressing to the climatic climax if disturbance does not occur.

Sump - A pit in which water collects before being bailed or pumped out.

Surface acre - The two dimensional water surface of a lake amounting
to 43,560 square feet.

Surface right - A claim, title to, or interest in the ground surface,
generally, which are enforceable by law.

Surge tank - A vessel for leveling out sudden changes in flow of water.
