A Draft Environmental Statement on the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project in
Colorado has been filed with the President's Council on Environmental Quality.
This statement has been approved for distribution and review by Secretary of
the Interior Robers C.B. Morton in accordance with the National Environmental
Policy Act of 1969.

The Fryingpan-Arkansas Project is a complex multipurposc water resource
development located in southeastern and ccntral Colorado. It is designed
to provide municipal and industrial water, supplemental irrigation water,
hydroelectric pO\'lcr, flood control, and other beneficial purposes including
recreation and the conservation and development of fish and wildlife.

The project includes numerous dams. reservoirs. canals. pipelines. tunncls,
transmission lincs, switchyards, and powerplants working in unified fashion to
meet national and regional objectives in the production and development of
Colorado's water and land resources.

The three-volume draft statcment describes the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project
and its purposes and function. An evaluation of the project's impact upon the
~hysical, biological, social, and csthetic aspects of the environment is a
part of the statement. Also discussed are actions taken by the project to
minimize or mitigate adverse project impacts and 3ctions taken to provide
enhancement of project effects, particuarly in thc area of fish and wildlife,
recreation, and esthetic qualities.

The draft statement will be avai lable for review and comment by all Federal,
State, and'local agencies and other interested individuals and groups after
Apri I 22, 1974. Comments received by June 22, 1974, wil I be incorporated into
the final statement.
