VII.

by algae respiration. One background deficit was assumed from
Monte Vista downstream. A lesser background deficit was assumed
at Del Norte and the deficit was increased linearly proceeding
downstream to match the deficit assumed at Monte Vista. The les-

ser background deficit assumed at Del Norte was also used for the

river reach between South Fork and Del Norte.

The background dissolved oxygen deficit was determined near

Del Norte and near Monte Vista by taking the difference between

the nightly dissolved oxygen verification data in the Rio Grande

at these two points and the theoretical dissolved oxygen satura-

tion at these points. At these two locations, the dissolved oxy-
gen deficit is caused primarily by algae respiration and a BOD
load from natural Sources and irrigation return flows. From the

tabulation presented in Table VII-C dissolved oxygen deficits of
0.5 mg/l and 1.3 mg/l were selected for Del Norte and Monte Vista
respectively.

- ~
{'
., \,

~,-.~
~~o
