w
00
-..J salinity by 14.2 mg/L. Plan formulation investigations are continuing on
0: the North Fork portion of the study area.

The SCS onfarm report is 'compatible with and focuses on the same priority
salt load problem areas on the east side of the Uncompahgre River as.the
Reclamation plan. Implementation of the onfarm program is scheduled to
begin in'FY 1986.

McE1mo C~eek Unit

The most .economica1 plan identified incorporates at least a part. of the
McE1mo CI"'.eek Unit with the Dolores Project which is now under construction. .
The High1iine Canal of the Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company, apart of the
McElmo Creek Unit, will be combined with the Towaoc Canal of the Dolores'
Project fllr reduced seepage and more effi c i ent water de 1 i very, savi ng about
$9.6 million over previous plans. The remaining laterals and canals will be.
1 i ned as a reduced-scal e McEl mo Creek Uni t. A Regi ona1 Director I s P1 anni ng
Report/Draft Environmental Statement is expected to be completed in March
1985. Enactment of the pending legislation would incorporate the features
of the unit as a part of the Dolores Participating Project.

Advance planning is proposed to begin in FY 1986 on the remaining laterals
and sections of canals in the McE1mo Creek Unit.

USDA's and Reclamation's water and salt budgets for the estimated values
of total ~a1t load and potential salt load reduction are within acceptable
1 imits. Although the Forum recommended that the USDA program be accelerated,
implementation of the onfarm program depends on construction of the off-farm
1 atera 1 system.

Continuing Evaluation

Big Sandy River Unit

The recommended plan, which was reviewed by the State of Wyoming, would
remove saline water by collection wells in the spring and seep area of the
Big Sandy River and would pump the water through a pipeline to a proposed
Chevron fettilizer plant near Rock Springs for use and disposal. Chevron and
Texasgulf have informed Reclamation that they no longer need the amount of
water originally determined because of changing market conditions. Studili!s
are underway with the State of Wyoming to determine the feasibility of piping
saline water to Jim Bridger Powerp1ant for powerplant cooling in conjunction
with Chevron-Texasgu1f use.

Advance planning is proposed for initiation in FY 1985 if an acceptable use
can be found for the water supply.

The USDA onfarm program, as outlined in their Big Sandy Report, is being
reevaluated: to see if low pressure sprinkler irrigation is a viable project
plan.

>{,

"
i
-:-1

>.
O'er
,-,;
,

\1
-~
1

)1

13
